Julia Hill, Program Manager

At Rubric, we do much more than pure translation. We work in genuine partnership with our clients, expertly orchestrating their entire localization process from start to finish. And we can only do that by gaining a deep understanding of each client’s needs, and constantly looking for better ways of working.
This big-picture approach is what sets Rubric apart, and it’s our experienced Program Managers who make it possible. Program Manager Julia Hill explains how she works with clients and supports our project management team to continuously improve the localization experience.
Hi Julia, can you tell us a bit about your role as a Program Manager?
As a Program Manager here at Rubric, my focus is our clients, building and maintaining relationships that are based on partnership, collaboration, support and trust. As well as providing oversight and governance for the everyday projects, a key area is localization strategy for different content types and guiding our clients through the various challenges that are thrown their way (and therefore our way) to achieve the best possible outcome for them.
To achieve success for our clients, I work very closely with the team here at Rubric, including our project managers, localization workflow engineers and development team. Continuous improvement is part of our psyche, and we are constantly looking at ways of doing things better to make sure we are delivering our absolute best for our clients in terms of efficiency and quality.
This includes being forward looking, researching and using the latest technology. We are currently implementing AI driven solutions, but we always have the human at the core of this making sure that both the translation approach and outputs are right for our clients.
Contributing towards success for our clients is the development and resourcing of our project management team. A key focus of the role is making sure we have a resilient, adaptive and motivated team with the right skills to support our clients and their various needs.
Not one day is the same and nearly every day there is a new exciting challenge to consider!
It does sound like there’s a lot of variety! How did you get into this role?
Well, I didn’t take the traditional route of progressing through the ranks, but that means I bring some different skills and an outside perspective as I’ve worked in several roles and industries.
With a doctorate in safety critical system and user interface design, I started out working in UI design, and since then I’ve had a varied career including roles in business analysis, process improvement, bid management, and customer service management—all of which have come in handy in my time at Rubric.
What do you like about working for Rubric?
I love the fact that the focus is our clients and it is a true partnership, not just a transactional vendor / client relationship. We are very transparent, always discussing how we could do things better and because of the way our tools are designed we’re incredibly responsive and flexible. We never force change on clients, but it’s great when we can educate and guide them, and then they listen! Often processes that used to feel quite chaotic and noisy start to become much more manageable.
We are a team here at Rubric. We’re constantly adapting and improving, iterating our approach in response to changing client requirements and new technologies.  We don’t stand still at Rubric and therefore you never feel stale.
And what do you like to do when you’re not at work?
I have a very energetic cocker spaniel called Buzz, which means I do a lot of walking and often by myself as Buzz is off running and sniffing! In fact, I often get my best ideas and inspiration on my morning dog walk through the woods—it’s the perfect way to work through the issues of the day ahead.
